The old saying goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

This is true as teachers and parents continue to seek ways to keep students interested in learning, now with the added distraction of technology invading kids’ lives. While smartphones may distract them as much as sports and raging hormones do, such innovations as 3D printing have been, thankfully, pulling their attention back to learning.

Here are three trends we see in education that will bring a renewed excitement to classrooms and campuses.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) or BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) is a term coined by Intel when the company saw its employees using their own personal electronic devices in the office. School administrators are witnessing this trend as students bring their own to schools and so are incorporating devices like phones, tablets and micro-PCs into their routines. Plus, they can increase productivity with innovations like our PageScope app, which gives students and teachers printing and scanning control on the go using wireless technology via our free app. We’ll see the BYOD trend continue as the prices of personal devices decrease and schools adopt and integrate them into the classroom. Preparing for PARCC Assessments

, Manager, Government and Education Solutions

Recently there has been a lot of debate around educational standards – individual state standards versus the national Common Core standard. In fact, PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) field testing for the Common Core started in March. The goal (for the field test) is to ensure that it works and can be executed in schools properly when PARCC testing formally begins in the spring of 2015.

In addition to examining specific aspects of the actual test, schools will be looking to see how their IT infrastructure and bandwidth handle online-based testing and if the tests work the same on PCs, laptops, tablets and on different browsers. With all the investments schools have made to prepare for PARCC testing, government and school officials as well as the public will be watching these field tests closely. (more…)

, Manager, Government and Education Solutions

September is here and that means the kids are back at school! As an educator, I love reading how technology is helping to engage a new generation of students to learn. Interactive white boards, iPads and educational apps are now common tools in the classroom.  But there are also a number of emerging solutions that help staff and teachers with basic administrative tasks.

In a school setting the multifunctional printer (MFP) is constantly being utilized and is the ideal device to help streamline workflows or communicate key school messages and policies.  There are now downloadable apps (similar to those used on mobile devices) available specifically for MFPs that are designed to increase productivity and make school administrative tasks easier.
