  • Navigating the Education Challenge

, Education Practice Director, All Covered

Mobile technology has changed the way people work, learn and communicate. Over the past few years, enterprise IT departments have embraced mobile technology and supported BYOD (bring your own device) policies. However, the mobile discussion isn’t limited to business. With 78 percent of teenagers using mobile devices, school districts have joined the BYOD conversation.

Leveraging mobile technology in the classroom helps engage students and makes learning more interactive. It is transforming the way students learn. It is also means that school districts need to adapt their IT infrastructure and policies to support a range of mobile devices and new online learning or social media tools. (more…)

The Long-term Benefits of Managed Print Services

, Executive Vice President, Sales and Business Development

Managed Print Service (MPS) offerings have matured and customer expectations drive well beyond the simple cost consolidation and fleet optimization offered in the past.

When we launched our Optimized Print Services (OPS) back in 2008, customers were mainly concerned about cost management and reducing print assets. While this remains a key driver, customers now expect their strategic partner to combine consultancy, workflow efficiencies, print fleet optimization, software integration, service and support for hardware and implementation services. Protect Your Print – Secure Printing

    , Director, Business Development

In August 2013, it was determined that Affinity Health Plan — a New York-based managed care plan — owed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights $1.2 million for violating HIPAA as part of a patient data breach case, reported Healthcare IT News.

“An HHS Office for Civil Rights investigation indicated that Affinity impermissibly disclosed the protected health information of these affected individuals when it returned multiple photocopiers to leasing agents without erasing the data contained on the copier hard drives.”

HIPAA regulations are not to be taken lightly.  It can cost businesses millions of dollars if the proper precautions are not taken when it comes to information sharing and organizational workflow.

There are those working outside the healthcare industry that need to equally protect sensitive patient information.  Take, for instance, Summit Educational Resources, a private organization in New York that provides education and therapeutic services to those with developmental disabilities. Preparing for PARCC Assessments

, Manager, Government and Education Solutions

Recently there has been a lot of debate around educational standards – individual state standards versus the national Common Core standard. In fact, PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) field testing for the Common Core started in March. Roughly four million students across 36 states and the District of Columbia will take part in the field test this spring. The goal (for the field test) is to ensure that it works and can be executed in schools properly when PARCC testing formally begins in the spring of 2015.

In addition to examining specific aspects of the actual test, schools will be looking to see how their IT infrastructure and bandwidth handle online-based testing and if the tests work the same on PCs, laptops, tablets and on different browsers. With all the investments schools have made to prepare for PARCC testing, government and school officials as well as the public will be watching these field tests closely. (more…)

Our industry is rapidly evolving to a solutions and services business model that focuses on technology and business process optimization along with hardware. The graphics communication segment of our business is no exception and is one that will receive particular attention from Konica Minolta in 2014.

As we witnessed during Print 2013, graphics communication customers are demanding increasingly sophisticated, comprehensive solutions to enhance performance and productivity, as well as to improve the competitiveness of their business.  Whether in commercial print or in-plant print shops, there is a major drive to increase internal process efficiency and expand offerings into new market segments.  The effect of this trend is that increasingly we are playing a consulting role with our customers to help identify opportunities to enhance their business process and generate new offerings for their end users. Staying Ahead of the Curve by Thinking Like Our Customers

, Executive Vice President, Sales and Business Development

At Konica Minolta, we talk a lot about staying ahead of the curve and getting to know our customers, but I want to explain what this really means for us. Let’s look at another company that executed this strategy well:

Apple wasn’t the first company to develop a product like the iPod.  Two companies brought products to market before Apple that were both elegant and functional, but Apple hit a home run when they combined hardware with iTunes software and the service of providing content.  This unique combination responded to a customer demand that is legendary today.

Similarly, we are organizing Konica Minolta to deliver a service-driven strategy and ultimately, to bring comprehensive solutions to customers. As our business transforms, we will continue to focus on customers’ business needs first, by understanding the industry and the unique business challenges. (more…)

Our Focus on the Customer Experience (CX)

, President and Chief Executive Officer

As a season ticket holder for the University of Kansas Jayhawk’s men’s basketball (my alma mater) team, I was struck by the high level of customer touch that transcended beyond the game. After attending the January 11, 2014 game, where the Jayhawks effortlessly claimed an 86-60 victory over Kansas State, the university did something I never expected. They sent me a personal email inquiring if I enjoyed the game. While already an engaged customer, this added “touch” sealed the deal that I would be a repeat customer next season. (more…)

At the HIMSS Annual Conference in Orlando I spoke with many customers – physicians, hospital administrators, ancillary care providers, and IT professionals.   Konica Minolta has always provided printing solutions to the healthcare industry, and while many HIMSS attendees know about us for reliable office and production print equipment, this was an opportunity for them to see our expanded EnvisionIT Healthcare portfolio.

From the Show Floor at LegalTech 2014

, Executive Vice President, Sales and Business Development

For years Konica Minolta has been working to help law firms, corporations and government agencies achieve efficiencies.  Our EnvisionIT Legal Portfolio combines professional services, IT Services, industry leading software and hardware to help legal professionals work smarter and more productively while meeting their industry’s unique document and security challenges.

At the recent LegalTech 2014 conference at the Hilton New York, I was asked about the evolution of IT services in the legal space and its benefits. Konica Minolta’s All Covered IT Services division has seen a resurgence in law firms investing in IT resources.  Firms are looking at their IT infrastructure and how it helps  to speed access to information while meeting security and compliance requirements.  This includes secure and easy access to content in any form including hard-copy and electronic document images. Top Solutions for Capturing Patient Information

, National Healthcare Market Manager, Solutions

Imagine a family practice office on a Monday morning with every seat in the waiting room full, and three people waiting at the check-in window.  Contrast that to an Emergency Room at a community hospital on a Friday night with 40-50 patients waiting to be admitted.  Each scenario is very different, but they have a few things in common – busy staff, anxious patients, and a challenging document workflow.  Add to that the necessity to correctly and quickly capture patient information and clinical notes in order to satisfy billing requirements and regulatory compliance while maintaining the privacy and security of the patient.

These are typical situations in today’s healthcare environment and are complicated by the fact that electronic health records (EHR) are changing the way clinicians do business.  Perhaps the biggest challenge for a healthcare provider is how to capture all of the paper documents associated with a patient visit or encounter.
