Working for a company that provides technology solutions means that it’s important for me to keep on top of technology trends. One clear way to do this is to look at current All Covered clients to see what challenges have been top of mind over the last year and to determine what services have been paramount to ongoing operations. The other valuable way is to look to industry leaders, such as Gartner.
I recently wrote the eBook (along with some very talented people here in the Konica Minolta marketing department), 10 Technologies Driving the Workplace of the Future™, and I knew I had to streamline intelligence from these various sources in order to make this eBook both accurate and interesting. In writing it, here are some of the most interesting developments I noticed:
Businesses want (and need) processes to be increasingly “smart.” From a simple profit standpoint, this makes total sense. Businesses want to assure that their resources – from employees to computers and servers – are being utilized efficiently. Companies also want to receive the best data they can on what is and isn’t working for them. That’s why I knew it was important to talk about both customer relationship management and business intelligence as well as digital ecosystems as technologies driving the Workplace of the Future. It’s clear that information gathering and sharing can empower a business if done properly – through solutions like robust, custom CRM solutions – as well as encouraging a connection between your products and services and your employees – allowing for smart decision-making. Our country’s ever-evolving healthcare landscape makes the future very unpredictable. Changes are occurring everywhere – regulation and legislation, reimbursement, technology, medical advances, and even the way healthcare is accessed and consumed. These changes impact how healthcare is delivered, paid for and administered. As such, it is imperative that Konica Minolta take an active role in understanding the industry and provide healthcare solutions in order to help our customers prepare for a future that will look very different than it does today. “Change is the only constant in life,” so said Heraclitus, the Greek philosopher, around 500 B.C. As I look toward the legal environment in 2017, that saying is alive and well thanks to the emergence of robotics, other workplace of the future solutions and artificial intelligence (AI), the next critical wave of change in law firms.
What is different from Heraclitus’ time is the velocity at which change is occurring. Advancing law firm technology has pushed firms to move uncommonly fast to implement the changes necessary to garner the benefits that are possible for strategic growth and overall survival. The law firm of the future must address these coming influences that are re-engineering how work will be done. What are these influences that I believe will impact the legal arena in 2017? The workplace is evolving, and work and life are becoming more integrated. To stay competitive, organizations around the world are investing in the employee experience to attract and retain top talent.
But what exactly is the employee experience and how do companies adapt? We recently tapped into Future of Work authority and best-selling author Jacob Morgan to get some insight.
According to Morgan, a simple explanation of employee experience is that it’s the difference between a workforce who has to show up, and one who wants to show up. This doesn’t necessarily involve fancy perks; instead, Morgan describes it as a combination of three unique environments that focus on:
The culture the company creates
The physical work environment (the workspace) and very importantly
Technology, or the tools that are available to employees in order to do their jobs.
“Technology is the central nervous system of an organization,” says Morgan. “It connects everyone and everything.”
Based on research from his upcoming book, The Employee Experience Advantage (March 2017) he expanded on the role that technology plays in employee experience in a webinar we presented as part of our Workplace of the Future initiative. He summarizes the factors that organizations need to consider when vetting technologies with the “ACE” formula:
Available to everyone: New technologies and tools should be available to all employees who want to use them.
Consumer-grade: It should be so beautiful, easy and valuable that employees would consider using something like it in their personal lives.
Employee needs vs. business objectives: It’s easy to get caught up in the business needs the technology meets while ignoring how they will be utilized. It’s important to understand how the employees will actually be able to use the tools.
“It’s important to think of your organization more like a lab, and less like a factory,” says Morgan. “It’s especially important when we’re thinking about technology.”

As I stood in front of 40 Konica Minolta executives and dealers, I was struck by the fact that this wasn’t a typical meeting. Office chairs were replaced with couches and the room echoed with spontaneous gasps and “wows.” This was the WorkSmart Startup Showcase.
The Startup Showcase occurs several times a year and highlights best-in-class emerging technologies. At the most-recent showcase, Greg Lok, WorkSmart Strategy Lead, highlighted products and solutions that enable a unified smart office. From improving meetings and communications to managing guests and understanding physical layouts, these products are designed to improve the way the workplace functions. They aren’t meant to replace workers but instead free them to focus on higher-value tasks.
